Visual Submission
This visual submission is about an artwork coming to life. The protagonist is a black-cloaked person who wanders around the village of the desert and appreciates the beauty of reality. Although mesmerized by the beauty of the desert, he is eaten by a stray cat in a comedic twist. For me, it was an experimental way to convey life’s beauty and its ugliness/unpredictability.
Thematically, I wanted to combine live-action with animated elements. I thought about how an artwork would react if it had any sentience and experienced the natural world. In addition, I wanted to consider the incompatibility between the living artwork and this world, given that the artwork mostly wandered to places around the desert. This submission is more of a quirky, playful tone contrasting with my other more serious works.
I was inspired by films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (which combined cartoons with live-action) and stop-motion filmmaking. However, my approach combined an existing painting with real scenery.
It was quite difficult to shoot because I had to imagine where the subject would be sitting while I was shooting on-site without an actual reference on camera. However, I took a picture of myself on location and added the robes and paint effects for close-up shots of the same character.
This submission was shot on location in Aït Benhaddou, Morocco.
